Hand dyed cotton, machine pieced and quilted, 22" x 22"
About the Artist Gena Mark:
I make art quilts for the wall. I hand dye cotton and silk fabric to create my own palette of bright colors. I like to alter traditional textile patterns to create a fractured, visually vibrating surface that requires a second look from the viewer to see all that is happening in the piece. To get the basic structure for the quilt I start with graph paper and graphite pencil so it can be a bit of a surprise when I add the colored fabric. When I start sewing I begin in the middle of the quilt, working with the basic outline and balancing the colored fabric pieces until the top is completed. It is fun putting the “puzzle” together to create a coherent composition.
I have enjoyed sewing since I was young. As an undergraduate I received a craft degree from Purdue University. I then worked and managed a weaving studio before attending and graduating with a Master of Fine Arts in textiles from Indiana University.
